If
this is your first visit, we recommend you arrive before dark! We are 2 1/2
miles off the hard surface road (US 250) and the road is gravel, dirt, mud,
rough and rocky in places. Last chance for supplies is in Monterey, which is
about 30 minutes away. You'll want to be sure you have everything with you
before you come, especially plenty of food.
Please call if you need assistance. Cell phone service is limited after you pass Hightown. (On top of the ridges there is service) If you are arriving after dark, we appreciate a call from Monterey so we will be on the look out for you. Please read the directions before you come because you will need them!! We suggest you print out a copy.
Directions:
Directions: From the West Virginia side: Take U. S. 250 to WV/VA border. Go 1.5 miles farther and turn right on County Road 601. (Bear Mountain Road)
From the East: Take U.S. 250 (Mountain Turnpike) west through Monterey and continue on 250 west to Hightown From the General Store in Hightown, continue traveling west on US 250 for 6.0+ miles to Bear Mountain Road (County Road 601) and turn Left off 250.
After you turn, you will go uphill, take a sharp right, then continue straight.
Go past the gate entrance to Red Oak Ranch on your left. The road will turn
to the right (do not go down to Laurel Lane through the gate) then up another
hill to the left. At the top of the hill there will be a small cottage on the
left and a sheep pasture on the right. Go through the gated cattle guard (most
of the year this gate will be closed but not locked.) Continue on the road
which runs on top of the ridge through a cattle field. After 1.6 miles total
from
250 you will see another closed gate near a sign that says, "End of State
Maintenance."
Go through this gate (please close all gates) then continue south on our private
driveway through a wooded area for approximately 3/4 mile, passing a large
hay field on your left. When the road forks, go left into our entrance.
There
is a rail fence and blue gate there (usually open) with our sign. Go down the
driveway for about 1/8 mile through the woods and when the area opens up, you
will see a parking sign to your right. Please park in designated area to the
right. Our house (the lodge) is up the hill to your left when you drive in.
Please come up to our house to register.
We have posted bear signs with arrows along the way to help guide
you. We
recommend a four-wheel drive vehicle during the early spring and late fall.
But if you don't have four wheel drive, just take it slowly. Travel time from
Monterey is approximately 30 minutes.
